Gupta Metallics & Power Ltd. (GMPL), incorporated in 2001, is a part of the Gupta group. Established in 1940, the Gupta Group has a presence in the manufacturing of sponge iron, dolomite, steel ingots as well as trading in minerals, coal, and steel.

GMPL mainly operates in two segments, manufacturing of sponge iron with a 90000 MT capacity in Chandrapur and trading of coal, coal based product and iron & steel. The contribution of the trading sales in the total sales, though volatile, has been on the higher side for the last three years. During FY07, the company had about 67% of the total sales from trading activities, a low margin business. At present, GMPL does not have own iron ore mines which exposes the company to the volatility in the iron ore prices. Presently, coal requirements are being met through coal linkage from Ministry of Coal (MOC), Government of India. The company has also received the allotment of a coal block (Nerad Malegaon Coal Block) in Yavatmal, Maharashtra which was cancelled later by Supreme Court ruling.
